Joan B. Smith
was born November 14, 1933, departed this life on February 20, 2018 at the wonderful age of 84. Born in Morristown, New Jersey at All Souls Hospital and a longtime resident of Morristown except for 10 years where she resided in Madison, New Jersey. She was affectionally known as Joni. She was predeceased by her parents Emma Allen and John Smith and her siblings Winifred, Kathleen, Ramona, Johnny, Freddy, George and Donald.
Joni attended Morris School District and The North Carolina School for Women located in Durham, North Carolina. When she returned home she was a model at Bamberger’s department store in Morristown, New Jersey. Shortly thereafter, Joni married Vernon Bass and to that union their daughter Vernee’ Bass Jennings was born. She later married Kenneth E. Chavious and to that union their son Micheal (Todd) Chavious was born.
Joni worked at Morris County Probation department for 34 plus years holding many positions including serving as the Administrative Assistant to Chief Enwright.
Joni was a member of Bethel AME of Madison, New Jersey and most recently Bethel AME of Morristown, New Jersey. She loved painting, drawing and was a talented seamstress.
Joni is survived by many friends and family including her daughter Vernee’ Jennings (husband Ron Jennings), son Michael (Todd) Chavious, grandson Troi Anderson, special niece Denise Chappell, great niece Danielle Baker, brother-in-law Noah J. Chappell, Jr. and sister-in-law Emeline Purvis from Morristown, and cousin June of California, great nieces and nephews and all of whom will cherish and carry on an abundance of joyful memories in her honor.
