Willie Mae Smith
born December 8, 1923, departed this life on November 13, 2017 at the wonderful age of 93. Born in Saxe, Virginia, she was a lifelong resident of Morristown, New Jersey since the age of 11. She was affectionately known as “Aunt Mae” to many generations of family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Louise Allen, James (Buck) Currin, younger brother James (Buck Jr.), and her beloved husband of 48 years George E. Smith
Aunt Mae worked at the U.S. Hammered Piston Ring Company, which manufactured airplane parts during WWII in Stirling, New Jersey. A short time after the war was over, she worked at All Souls Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey, where she shared her caring and nurturing attributes with patients, as a dietitian. Aunt Mae subsequently became a primary caregiver; raising several generations of families and managing households. She especially enjoyed helping run her late husband’s taxi service, Smith’s Tax, where she used a CB Radio to answer calls and schedule rides, until the early 1990’s.
Aunt Mae enjoyed knitting blankets and scarfs for many family members and close friends. She also enjoyed traveling, hosting dinners at home and frequently dined at fine restaurants.
Aunt Mae is survived by many family and friends including grand and great-grand nieces and nephews, brother-in-law Noah J. Chappell, Jr., sisters-in-law Joan Smith and Emeline Purvis from Morristown, all of whom will cherish and carryon an abundance of joyful memories in her honor. Aunt Mae’s presence, witty personality and sayings will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
