Bernice Chappell Able
formerly of Morristown, died in Louisville, Kentucky at the home of her daughter on November 4, 2017 at the age of 93. She was the wife of the late Abraham Able Sr and the Mother of the late Abraham “Bruce” Able Jr all of Morristown. Mrs. Able was a graduate of South Carolina State Hospital for Nursing Colored Women and received her Registered Nurse degree in 1944. Mrs. Able moved from State Park, South Carolina in 1944 to Morristown, New Jersey with her late husband Abraham Able. She worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lyons, New Jersey for a number of years before taking a position in the Labor and Delivery room at Morristown Memorial Hospital where she remained until her retirement in 1985. She was an active member of Union Baptist Church since 1944.
After retirement, Mrs. Able was an active in a number of local civic organizations. She was featured in the Daily Record for her volunteer work as well as being a pioneer minority nurse at Morristown Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Elizabeth Able McLaurine, son in law Lt. Colonel Charles A. McLaurine USMC (Retired), Grandson Michael Paul McLaurine and a Granddaughter Candace McLaurine Becker (Wesley) all of Louisville, Kentucky.
